Asphalt is all around us in the UK – on our roads and on our driveways and we even play tennis on it! It’s not something most of us give much thought but it’s an important part of our everyday lives and something that has kept our economy moving.

At Roadlay we have established our business around the production and installation of Asphalt, a highly durable and flexible product. With our in-depth industry knowledge, we have even manufactured our own Asphalt, and built up our business on creating stunning surfaces across many industries using this fantastic natural resource. From major roads to driveways and carparks, to farm yard surfaces and pathways and sports courts.

But what is asphalt, and how do we use it to create high quality surfacing?

Strictly speaking, what we use on driveways and roads isn’t asphalt in its original form, but an asphalt compound. Asphalt is in fact a hydrocarbon derived from waste materials from the manufacturing of petrol, kerosene and diesel fuels. Asphalt is a by-product left behind once these elements have been removed and to create the product we use in surfacing, it is heated until it is the consistency of tar and mixed with other materials such as crushed stone, sand or gravel to produce the compound we use to surface driveways, roads and any number of areas we use in our everyday life.

As a result, Asphalt has a strong and effective binding property that makes it an incredible surface material. It is hard wearing, long lasting, durable, flexable and creates surfaces that are built to stand the test of time.
