Roadlay is a family owned Company with over 40 years Director / senior management experience within the Scottish asphalt, aggregates and ready mixed concrete industry.
IN 2007, they set up an independent asphalt production Company MacAdam Asphalt, in Lanark, which was very successful and together they expanded into operating their own tipper fleet, sand and gravel quarry and asphalt laboratory, research and development business. In 2019 Tillicoultry Quarries acquired MacAdam Asphalt Group and the Denny family moved onto their next venture Roadlay Ltd

Stewart Denny
Directors
MBA and BA in Business Studies and Management – University of Portsmouth Business School. Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying and Member of the Institute of Asphalt Technology.
Stewart has senior Board level/ Director experience in Scotland with Tarmac, RMC Group PLC (Scottish Aggregates ltd), RMC Russell PLC and Cemex with an impressive record of business growth and success.
Stewart worked with North American and European quarry companies before establishing a family quarry company, Macadam Asphalt Company Ltd which manufactured and sold asphalt. The company was based in Cloburn Quarry in Lanark (the largest independent quarry in Scotland). Macadam Asphalt successfully supplied South Lanarkshire Council via their framework for Asphalt materials for 10 years. The company was well known for new innovative products using Cloburn aggregate which is the most durable stone in the UK together with enhanced bitumen content to give South Lanarkshire Council a highly durable material that could be laid thinner therefore giving significant savings to the Council. The turnover grew to £10m p.a. and won an award from South Lanarkshire Council for the fastest growing business in Scotland. The company was sold in 2019 to Tillicoultry Quarries, one of the largest family-owned quarry companies in the UK.
The family established Roadlay Ltd in early 2020. The company has gone from strength to strength with an impressive, accelerated growth which is due to Stewart and Craig’s reputation in the industry and the successful projects that have been delivered leading to repeat business and growth through word of mouth.
Stewart has extensive knowledge of the asphalt, road surfacing and quarrying industry in Scotland. Stewart has excellent business acumen with proven track record of achieving business growth and success. He excels in building strong business relationships built on trust.
Craig Denny

On graduation in 2010, Craig joined the family company Macadam Asphalt as Production and Distribution Manager of our busy Ashpalt plant. Craig learned every aspect of Asphalt production and testing and attended Newcastle University to study Asphalt Technology. Craig set up a new company Asphalt Laboratories Ltd, based in Cloburn Quarry and lead the achievement of testing all materials to BS:EN13108 standards the company’s National Highways Sector No.14 Quality Management Scheme EN ISO9001:2015.
Craig attained a CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) which is required to manage an Operators Licence for HGV vehicles. He set up Macadam Transport Ltd and invested in 10 brand new HGV tipper trucks. Craig managed the drivers, operating hours, maintenance of trucks and capacity and availability for Asphalt logistics. This company supplied Asphalt materials to South Lanarkshire Council and created a further 10 local jobs. Craig contributed to the opening of Macadam Asphalt’s new Prettsmill sand and gravel Quarry in Lanark which provided Asphalt sand to Macadam Asphalt; this secured an in-house supply of this essential material. South Lanarkshire Council were very supportive in this venture and granted planning permission. He took on the companies tender processes with great success, gaining framework entry on all surrounding councils, winning and holding the South Lanarkshire Council supply contract.
Craig established the family business – Roadlay Ltd – in early 2020. At Roadlay, we are product manufactures, material designers, asphalt technologists and civil engineers, turned contractor, allowing us to specify a variety of specialist materials for modern design solutions and install them quickly and correctly. We can engage with engineers and architects, working to existing engineers’ drawings, or prepare our own reports and issue our own expertise.

It’s essential when appointing a contractor, you engage the services of experts who have proven technological experience and have undertaken government and large-scale commercial contracts whereby they have had to supply accreditation, insurance and Quality Management systems. Operating our plant, machinery and haulage, health and safety has been at the forefront of our organisation continually revising and improving our QMS, whilst having to adhere to the very strict British Standards for machine operation, transport operator’s licence regulation, product quality and SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) to name a few.
Therefore, our customers can trust us with their project or property safe in the knowledge that Roadlay provides these same assurances, quality and regulation from new road construction, right down to the renovation of a private driveway,
All Roadlay’s products will be CE marked and supplied and laid in accordance with British Standards, and our company’s Quality Management System. Type tests of materials used are issued on completion of every job.

Our senior management team grew from a standalone asphalt company to one of Scotland’s leading contractors with a tipper fleet, sand and gravel quarry, asphalt laboratory and research facility. These businesses were sold to a major quarrying company allowing us to now concentrate on developing our plant and workforce to fulfilling major private and public sector contracts. We own our own plant and transport machinery fleet and hold the relevant transport and waste carrier licences.

Health and safety have been at the forefront of our organisation, continually revising and improving our QMS whilst adhering to the rigorous British Standards for machine operation, transport operator’s licence regulation, product quality and SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency).
